 | Ken Proudman - view Arbitrator profile BARR LLP (Alberta)
Hosted by CBA Child & Youth South in Alberta from 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm on September 5, 2023 Link: http://www.cbapd.org/details_en.aspx?id=AB_AB23CYL22S A discussion of family violence in the context of litigation and what it can mean for counsel – what Keira’s Law means, and a discussion of applications available under the Protection Against Family Violence Act.
We will have two presentations during this webinar;
Presentation 1: (Philip Viater): 4-year-old Keira Kagan wanted to change the world. The personal tragedy led Keira’s mother, Jennifer Kagan, and this family law lawyer and former criminal lawyer (and step-father of Keira Kagan) to put forward a Private Members’ Bill which unanimously passed at the House of Commons, the Senate and received Royal Assent on April 27, 2023. In describing the rationale for the Bill, Senator Fabian Manning said “The stakes couldn’t be higher”. Keira's Law - former Bill C-233 amends the federal Judges Act to provide training for judges on intimate partner violence and coercive control. It is now the law throughout all of Canada.
Presentation 2: (Colleen Christie): Emergency Protection Orders – When, Why, and How. A discussion regarding the available options for protection under the Protection Against Family Violence Act (PAFVA), the criteria required, and the process and procedures involved in obtaining an Emergency Protection Order. As well, as a discussion about other available orders for protection and resources available for those exposed to family violence.
