 | Ken Proudman - view Arbitrator profile BARR LLP (Alberta)
Hosted by CBA Family North in Alberta from 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm on October 12, 2023 Educating Your Family Law Client to Avoid False Binary Positions on Parent-Child Contact Problems (Alienation vs Family Violence)
Michael Saini, PhD, MSW, RSW (Professor and Factor-Inwentash Chair in Law and Social Work at the University of Toronto)
This webinar will underscore the importance of educating Family Law clients to avoid rigid, win-lose approaches to parent-child contact problems (PCCP). Such binary advances can harm children and escalate conflicts unnecessarily. Lawyers play a pivotal role in shifting their clients’ perspectives and creating realistic expectations to reduce the risks of entrenched litigation. Lawyers can guide their clients toward a better understanding of the complex and multi-factor influences of PCCP and help them avoid the trap of false binary thinking of alienation or violence as the only two contrasting causes of PCCP. The webinar will give more tools to Family lawyers to orient their clients in a child-focused way and to maximize opportunities to step out of litigation when appropriate to reduce the emotional and financial toll of litigation.
